Ezekiel 33

Matthew 7:21-24

Luke 13

Christ will do everything for you or nothing. He’s either all of your righteousness or none. The irreligious don’t repent at all and the religious only repent of sins. But Christians repent of their wrongfully placed righteousness.

Jeremiah is not saying that the Mosaic covenant represents a religion of ritual externals over against the new covenant’s promise of internalize religion. The issue is that Israel has divorced the internal from the external. It has forgotten that the rites and observances of its religious are meant to picture its covenant loyalty to Yahweh. The prophets indict not religious form, but rather religion reduced to mere formalism.
