Anthony Gammage – Proverbs 1:8-33
Sermon Quotes
Proverbs 1:8–23
[8] Hear, my son, your father’s instruction,
and forsake not your mother’s teaching,
[9] for they are a graceful garland for your head
and pendants for your neck.
[10] My son, if sinners entice you,
do not consent.
[11] If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood;
let us ambush the innocent without reason;
[12] like Sheol let us swallow them alive,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
[13] we shall find all precious goods,
we shall fill our houses with plunder;
[14] throw in your lot among us;
we will all have one purse”—
[15] my son, do not walk in the way with them;
hold back your foot from their paths,
[16] for their feet run to evil,
and they make haste to shed blood.
[17] For in vain is a net spread
in the sight of any bird,
[18] but these men lie in wait for their own blood;
they set an ambush for their own lives.
[19] Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain;
it takes away the life of its possessors.
[20] Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
in the markets she raises her voice;
[21] at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
[22] “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing
and fools hate knowledge?
[23] If you turn at my reproof,
behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;
I will make my words known to you.
Proverbs 1:7
[7] The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:22
[22] “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing
and fools hate knowledge?
“A person in such a state will not go far until they meet a temptress or tempters, who know what they want and what they half want.”
-Derek Kidner
James 1:6–8
[6] But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. [7] For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; [8] he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Proverbs 21:2
[24] “Scoffer” is the name of the arrogant, haughty man
who acts with arrogant pride.
Psalm 1:1
[1] Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
To sit in the company of scoffers (Psalm 1) is to make cynicism and sneering a habitual response.
-Tim Keller
Titus 3:10–11
[10] As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, [11] knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.
Matthew 12:19–21
[19] He will not quarrel or cry aloud,
nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets;
[20] a bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not quench,
until he brings justice to victory;
[21] and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”
Proverbs 1:23
[23] If you turn at my reproof,
behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;
I will make my words known to you.
Acts 3:19
[19] Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out
John 14:15–16
[15] “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. [16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever
Romans 1:24
[24] Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves
Proverbs 1:33
[33] but whoever listens to me will dwell secure
and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”
