Passage: Jeremiah 31:31-34

31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Sermon Questions

  1. The law: What is Christ’s design for God’s law by establishing the new covenant? What is your typical attitude toward God’s law? As new covenant believers, how should we think about God’s law? How should we pray regarding God’s law? For further reflection, read 2 Corinthians 3 and the beginning of Romans 8.
  2. Knowing God: How do Christians come to know God through Christ in the new covenant? What are some things about God’s person, character, ways, will, Word, that you have come to know and delight in? In what ways do you still need to grow in knowing God? How does this growth in intimacy happen?
  3. Forgiveness: What does it mean that God forgives our iniquity and remembers our sin no more? What are some of the implications of this? For further reflection, read Hebrews 8, 9 and 10.
  4. Spend time in praise and prayer to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: praise for the new covenant and all that it means, prayer for God to work these things more in our hearts and lives, and prayer for Christ to come again.
