Worship Mission

"To be worshipers, transformed by the Gospel, who effectively and relevantly lead the corporate body in exalting Jesus Christ and worshiping God in Spirit and in truth."

The Meaning of Worship at New Life

Worship is central to what we do at New Life, because worship is central to the life of any Christian. Jesus said that the Father seeks "true worshipers" who will worship Him in "Spirit and in Truth" (John 4:23). To this end, the Worship Ministry exists to lead and support the body in the worship of God, primarily through music.

For the Christian, all of life is worship. We are never out of God's presence, and everything we do is to be for God and His glory (1 Cor. 10:31). We are to offer up all of ourselves, and all that we do, to God (Rom. 12:1).

But Christians are also called to come together regularly in order to worship God through "psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs," (Eph. 5:19-20; Col. 3:16-17) and through the hearing of the Word of God through preaching and teaching. Gathering as God's people-whether in a large group Sunday morning or in a small group during the week-is set up by God for His glory and for our benefit. We need those times of corporate worship to remind us of our identity, of our destiny and most fundamentally, our God.

What We Believe Worship Should Be

At New Life, we believe that there is no such thing as true worship apart from the Gospel. All human beings are worshipers, of course. We worship ourselves and our desires and anything we can think of, except God. We are sinners, separated from God, helpless to change our state, and unwilling to give God the glory that He alone is due. But the Gospel is the Good News that Jesus Christ has changed all of that. Jesus Christ died for us. Now, instead of being controlled by our sin--instead of worshiping things that will only pass away--we are united to Christ, and we can enjoy fellowship with God. We are set free to worship the only one who is worthy to receive praise and glory! When we worship God, we express the glorious truths of the Gospel. For that reason, in worship we focus on Jesus Christ and His work on the Cross - because without Him, we would not want to praise God - we would only fear Him and fight Him!

In our worship, we strive to engage both the heart and mind. One of the great blessings of music is that it can bridge the 14 inches between head and heart, and unite them in worship. Our worship is supposed to be in Spirit and in Truth. It is supposed to be informed by the glorious knowledge of God, and what He has done through Jesus Christ on the Cross on our behalf. This knowledge is never dry or cerebral, but should move us to appropriate expressions of grief and sadness over our sin, and love, gratitude and joy for our salvation and all the blessings we enjoy in Christ. In worship, we are always striving to bring together the two elements of head and heart, knowledge and passion-because if we are missing either one, our worship is incomplete.
